Week 3: Slay It Up – Stock Diversification

This week it’s time for you to learn how to craft a suitable mix of investments.  Diversification and asset allocation help you build a foundation for investing in the stock market. This is a great place to start if you are a beginning investor or would like a refresher if you have already started on your investing journey.

Sector

It is a group of businesses that share related products or services.  Investors use the 11 sectors in the stock market to categorize their investments.  Each sector has a different set of characteristics and risks associated with them that may attract certain investors.

Day 13 – Stock Market Sectors

It is important to know about the various sectors to avoid having a concentration of your funds in one area of the market.  Think of sectors as supermarket aisles.  Would you buy all of your groceries from one aisle of the store.  Of course not, right?  There is a lot to choose from when it comes to investing in the stock market and as a beginning investor, you may want to focus on a few sectors to start with.

Here is a brief look at the 11 sectors.  It is a good idea to take a quick peek at the sectors you may be invested in, periodically.  This will keep you abreast to any erratic shifts that may be occurring in those particular industries.

Today’s Investing Activity: Today’s activity focuses on understanding the different sectors of the stock market.  This can help you to build a diversified portfolio and reduce your risk of investing by keep you from being over concentrated in one area of the market.

Identify the industry and sectors for the stocks listed in the worksheet.  List the three stocks from your watch list and indicate the industry and sector for each.  If you are using the Yahoo! Finance App, then it will only show the sector.

You can use the “Stock Sectors Worksheet” to complete today’s activity.

STEP ONE:
