Ticker Symbol

A ticker symbol or stock symbol is a one- to four-character alphabetic abbreviation or symbol which represents a publicly traded company on a stock exchange. The ticker symbol is used to obtain current pricing information (called a quote) and conduct research on a company.

Some ticker symbols are similar to the company’s name such as Uber (Ticker: UBER). But, other companies may have a ticker symbol that aligns with their company’s name and have a creative twist such as The National Beverage Co. (Ticker: FIZZ).

Let’s take a look at a quote I researched on AMC.  This quote shows the ticker symbol as AMC.  It also provides me with the stock price of $5.29 and shows that this price increased $0.12 (or 2.32%) from the previous day. The highest the stock priced reached for the day was $5.415 and the lowest was $5.09.  The number of shares traded (meaning bought and sold throughout the day) was 1,4387,803, where it states “volume”.

Day 2: Ticker Tape Tactics

So, let’s break down some stock market lingo for you! A “ticker symbol” is like a stock’s unique nickname, you know, the name it goes by on the stock market stage. It’s a short combo of letters that represents a company. Like, Amazon goes by “AMZN,” and Nike’s goes by “NKE”.

Now, imagine a “ticker tape” as the hottest live updates on what’s going up (or down) in the stock market. It’s a flashy, real-time display showing the latest prices and changes for stocks. Picture it like the MVP of stock market fashion shows – all the trends and moves right in front of you, in real time. So, when you see those symbols rolling across the screen like VIP passes, you know what stocks are making moves and shaking things up.

So, whether you’re vibing with AAPL or NKE, just keep an eye on that ticker tape, and you’ll be riding the stock market wave like a true investing StockSistar. 📈💸✨

Today’s investing activity focuses on brand awareness and looking at the products and services you use as investment opportunities. Your activity for today is to identify three brands or companies you patronize and locate the ticker symbol for each. To do this I want you to recall how you may have interacted or used brands throughout your day.

Here are a couple of examples:

With the new year comes time to work on getting in shape. I listen to my APPLE Air Pods as I run three miles on my spin cycle on my PELOTON.  On my way home from work, I make a stop at COSTCO to pick-up items to meal-prep for the week.

Or

This Saturday, I have some shopping to do at TARGET.  On the list, I have to pick up laundry detergent made by PROCTOR & GAMBLE. I can’t forget to swing by STARBUCKS to grab a Honey Citrus Mint Tea before I leave the store.

If you have a 401k or brokerage account, then you may be able to obtain ticker symbols and quotes from those websites.  Feel free to use a website such as TDAmeritrade or Yahoo!Finance to look up your companies’ ticker symbols.

Today’s Investing Activity: Select three brands/companies. Write each company’s ticker symbol and stock price information.
