Day 1: Why Invest?

This training/challenge is for educational and informational purposes only.  These materials do not constitute a recommendation to engage in any particular securities transactions.

Investment products are: Not FDIC insured | Not guaranteed by the bank | May lose value

Week 1: Stock Basics

This week’s goal is to introduce you to stocks and help you build a foundation for investing in the stock market.  This is a great place to start if you are a beginning investor or would like a refresher if you have already started on your investing journey.

Ticker Symbol

A ticker symbol or stock symbol is a one- to four-character alphabetic abbreviation or symbol which represents a publicly traded company on a stock exchange. The ticker symbol is used to obtain current pricing information (called a quote) and conduct research on the company. Some ticker symbols are similar to the company’s name such as PayPal (Ticker: PYPL). But, other companies may have a ticker symbol that aligns with their company’s name and have a creative twist such as YUM! Brands (Ticker: YUM), which includes Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and the KFC Division.

Let’s take a look at a quote I researched on Denny’s.  This quote shows the ticker symbol as DENN.  It also provides me with the stock price of $11.91 and shows that this price decreased $0.15 from the previous day.  The information to the right tells me the highest and lowest price for the day, as well as the number of shares traded where it states “volume”.

Day 2: Anatomy of a Stock

The ticker symbol is like having a key to unlock a door. With a ticker symbol, you can gain information to help you review the stock and financial stats for a particular company. We use products and services every day without knowing the companies tickers or how much their share price may be available for us to purchase.

Today’s Investing Activity: Select three brands/companies. Write each company’s ticker symbol and stock price information.

Your activity for today is to identify three brands or companies you patronize and locate the ticker symbol for each.

To do this I want you to recall how you may have interacted or used brands throughout your day. For example:

I’m currently working on my fitness goals. My FITBIT shows that I walked 6,348 steps, today. I headed to 24-HOUR FITNESS and did 30 minutes of cardio, before heading to SAFEWAY to pick-up some skinless, boneless chicken breast for dinner.

Or

On my way to work, I stopped at the CHEVRON gas station to fill up the tank of my FORD Fusion. Then, I went through the STARBUCKS drive-thru and grabbed a latte.

Or

My daughter has a senior project due this week and we went to the DOLLAR TREE to get supplies, where I used my VISA debit card for the purchase. Later that evening, I let her use my APPLE iPad to conduct research..

If you have a 401k or brokerage account, then you may be able to obtain ticker symbols and quotes from those websites.  Feel free to use a website such as TDAmeritrade or Yahoo!Finance to look up your companies’ ticker symbols.

Click here ==> “Company Quote-Wksht” to use the worksheet to record this information.

  • Write down three brands/companies you have recently patronized
  • Locate the ticker symbol, stock price information and write on your worksheet (if not a US Public company, try again)
  • Share your companies, ticker symbols and current price in the The Stocks & Stilettos Society or in the comments below

Today’s investing activity focuses on brand awareness and looking at the products and services you use as investment opportunities.

It depends on which app you are using. If it’s the Yahoo!Finance app, then it will be in the “Key Statistics” section of the daily stock quote.
